A useful resource for a local farm can begin as a byproduct of manufacturing. At KPI Concepts, sawdust reuse has connected our shop with the local farming community for 30 years.
Over that time, our dust-collection systems have captured approximately 5.2 million cubic feet of sawdust. Instead of sending that material to a landfill, we have given it to local farmers for livestock bedding and other agricultural needs.
What begins as a byproduct of our work can serve another purpose beyond the shop. Repeated over three decades, that simple practice adds up to a substantial amount of material put back to use.
It can be difficult to picture 5.2 million cubic feet. For perspective, that estimated volume is enough to fill roughly 7,700 20-foot grain trailers. Spread across 30 years, it represents nearly one trailer’s worth of material for every business day.
Figures are approximate. Trailer comparisons describe equivalent material volume, rather than a count of individual deliveries.
The cumulative total reflects the value of consistency, KPI Concepts support for local farmers, and our commitment to less waste. A routine decision about a manufacturing byproduct can make a meaningful difference when it becomes part of everyday operations for decades.
Manufacturing starts with materials that need to be shaped, sized, and assembled for their intended use. Our commercial cabinetry and millwork and casework bring those materials into finished products for commercial spaces.
Cutting and routing produce sawdust along the way. That byproduct is part of the larger story of what happens to material as it moves through a manufacturing environment.
Our long-standing sawdust reuse practice gives collected material a purpose beyond the products we build. It also creates a practical connection between our manufacturing work and the needs of nearby farms.
For local farmers, the collected sawdust has served as livestock bedding and material for other agricultural needs. For KPI Concepts, giving it another use has been a practical way to keep a useful byproduct out of the landfill benefiting our community as a whole.
This story extends beyond the volume of material. It reflects a connection between two kinds of work within our community: making products in the shop and caring for agricultural operations on local farms.
Over 30 years, that connection has turned millions of cubic feet of sawdust into a resource with another job to do. It is one example of how the everyday details of manufacturing can have an impact beyond the finished product.
At KPI Concepts, our sawdust reuse story is built on a straightforward idea: when a byproduct can serve a useful purpose, it deserves a second look.
Approximately 5.2 million cubic feet later, this long-standing practice shows how everyday decisions can add up over time—and support the community around us.
